thomas2013-12-17 06:25:22 NewsI'm
amazed that no one seems to be giving a thought to the nanny (also an
Indian) here... To give people some perspective, I'm an Indian living in
the US, and I pay the babysitter $13-15 per hour. That is standard in
most big cities. This lady was paying the poor nanny $3 per hour! And
also made her lie on visa applications to cover it up! Why are people so
bothered that the rich well-connected Indian was caught (justly too)
and no one cares about the poor Indian nanny who was being exploited
abroad? What is wrong with our mentalities?

Thomas T Oommen, Chairman, FOMAA Political Forum2013-12-16 16:46:16 NewsThank you Mr. Moideen Puthenchira. It is an excellent article. You highlighted the agony of those who are here, working for our community. There are a number of vacancies in our consulate that hurts the services that they can provide to our community. The thousands and thousands and thousands of paper work that they are doing must be appreciated. Of course the facility cannot handle the needs of our community since our community so large. But one must understand they are doing a great deal of stressful work striving to meet our needs, despite their limitations. During this season of peace and goodwill , let us take a moment to appreciate and show our support to Indian diplomats.
It is not a laughing matter to see a teenage daughter of a diplomat, getting arrested and humiliated in front of her teachers and classmates. The emotional scar that she carries is beyond words. She was completely innocent. The real culprits, though identified, were never apprehended. A young mother of two little girls being arrested and treated like a "terrorist" in front of other parents and people on broad daylight, early in the morning while dropping her daughter in school in TOTALLY UNAmerican It doesn't even happen in third world countries. Let us come together and voice our protest against injustices. We cannot afford to have our consular services stopped because of these pattern of"going after"our consular staff and their families.
Apropos Bijuny’s comment, this is not merely a paycheck or deduction issue.
There are so many other major issues connected to this case. It is very clear
that, regardless of the severity of Khobragade’s alleged fraud, the US has
violated international law on two counts at least, once by arresting a foreign
consular officer and a second time by handcuffing her. As Article 41(1) of the Vienna Convention on Consular
Relations (VCCR) , “[c]onsular officers shall not be liable to arrest or
detention pending trial, except in the case of a grave crime and pursuant to a
decision by the competent judicial authority.” The second clause of the same
article goes on to state that “consular officers shall not be committed to
prison or be liable to any other form of restriction on their personal freedom
save in execution of a judicial decision of final effect.”
The reports says, Khobragade, currently posted as deputy consul general at
the Indian consulate in New York, had moved the civil suit against the domestic
servant Richard in the HC apprehending that the maid might accuse her of
ill-treatment during her employment in the US.
In her suit, Khobragade has said Richard was employed with her in the US
since November 23, 2012 as an India Based Domestic Assistant with an
official passport issued by the India government. She said the problem started
in March 2013, when Richard started asking her for permission to allow her to
work outside on her off day, Sunday.
However, Richard was told that she was not legally entitled to work anywhere
else as she was on an official passport with a dependent visa. Seven months
later, on June 23, Richard left Khobragade’s house to buy groceries and failed
to return. Khobragade informed the consulate general in New York and requested
them to inform the concerned authorities.
Richard resurfaced on July 8, 2013 at the ‘access immigration’ in New York
where she demanded a sum of US 10,000 dollars as her dues for her wages, an
ordinary Indian passport, and immigration relief. On the same day, Indian
government revoked her passport, thus making her as illegal resident in the
U.S, and requested the US Department of State to assist the consulate in
repatriating her to India. U.S. Instead of executing the request of Govt. of
India,the Department of State waited
almost six months and arrested Dy. Consul General.
