ചെന്നൈ: തമിഴ്‌നാട് , മഹാരാഷ്ട്ര മുന്‍ഗവര്‍ണര്‍ ഡോ.പി.സി.അലക്‌സാണ്ടര്‍ (90) അന്തരിച്ചു. ചെന്നൈയിലെ മദ്രാസ് മെഡിക്കല്‍ മിഷന്‍ ആസ്പത്രിയില്‍ ബുധനാഴ്ച രാവിലെ 8.30നായിരുന്നു അന്ത്യം. അര്‍ബുദ രോഗബാധിതനായിരുന്നു. 

ശനിയാഴ്ച മാവേലിക്കരയില്‍ ശവസംസ്‌കാരം നടക്കും.

പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിമാരായ ഇന്ദിരാഗാന്ധിയുടെയും രാജീവ് ഗാന്ധിയുടെയും പ്രിന്‍സിപ്പല്‍ സെക്രട്ടറിയായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. രാജ്യസഭാംഗവും ആയിരുന്നു. 'ത്രൂ ദി കോറിഡോര്‍സ് ഓഫ് പവര്‍' എന്ന ആത്മകഥ ശ്രദ്ധ നേടിയിരുന്നു. രാഷ്ട്രപതിയായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പേര് പരിഗണിച്ചിരുന്നു.

ജനീവയിലെ ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്രസഭാ ഇന്റര്‍നാഷണല്‍ ട്രേഡ് സെന്ററില്‍ അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് സെക്രട്ടറിയായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്ന കാലത്താണ് ഇന്ദിരാഗാന്ധി പ്രിന്‍സിപ്പല്‍ സെക്രട്ടറിയായി നിയമിച്ചത്. 

വാണിജ്യ മന്ത്രാലയ സെക്രട്ടറിയായി നാലുവര്‍ഷവും ലണ്ടനിലെ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ഹൈക്കമ്മീഷണറായി മൂന്നു വര്‍ഷവും സേവനം അനുഷ്ഠിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 1988 മുതല്‍ 90 വരെയാണ് തമിഴ്‌നാട് ഗവര്‍ണറായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചത്. 1993 മുതല്‍ 2002 വരെ മാഹാരാഷ്ട്ര ഗവര്‍ണറായിരുന്നു. 1996 മുതല്‍ 98 വരെയാണ് ഗോവ ഗവര്‍ണറുടെ ചുമതല വഹിച്ചത്.

 

Chennai, Aug 10 (IANS) P.C. Alexander, the powerful former principal secretary to prime minister Indira Gandhi who also served Rajiv Gandhi briefly, died at a hospital here Wednesday morning, family sources said. He was 90.

Alexander was undergoing treatment at the Madras Medical Mission Hospital for heart ailments. The end came at 8.30 a.m..

His body will be taken to his Chennai residence before being flown to Kochi in Kerala Friday. The funeral will be held Saturday at his home parish at Mavelikera town in Alappuzha district, the family said.

Alexander was the principal secretary to Indira Gandhi and virtually served as her shadow and policy adviser for the years after her return to power in January 1980.

He briefly served Rajiv Gandhi but the latter was not very comfortable with his paternal style and had him replaced. He was sent as India's High Commissioner to Britain.

A former civil servant, he was invited by Indira Gandhi to become her principal secretary when he was serving at the United Nations.

He became the governor of Tamil Nadu in 1988, holding the post till 1990. He served as the Maharashtra governor in 1993-2002.

He quit the post in disgust after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) first proposed his name for presidency but then opted for A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Alexander was also a former member of the Rajya Sabha and continued to take a keen interest in national affairs till some time ago.

Alexander's death came three days after that of B.C. Deshmukh, another former civil servant who served as cabinet secretary and principal secretary to three prime ministers. Deshmukh died in Pune.

 

Alexander enjoyed Maharashtra's respect

Mumbai, Aug 10 (IANS) P.C. Alexander, who died Wednesday at the age of 90, was not only Maharashtra's longest serving governor but also one of its finest and won respect from the treasury benches and opposition alike.

This tribute came from present Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan, who offered condolences in a message addressed to Alexander's son Ashok.

"It would be fair to say that Alexander created benchmarks for fellow and future governors," Sankaranarayanan noted, describing him as "not only the longest serving governor in the state but also as one of its finest".

Sankaranarayanan said that during his tenure as governor between January 1993 and July 2002, Alexander brought his vast experience as an international diplomat.

"Alexander commanded supreme respect both from the treasury and the opposition benches because of his dignified and impartial conduct," he added.

 

PM condoles P.C. Alexander's death

New Delhi, Aug 10 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday condoled the death of P.C. Alexander, former principal secretary to prime minister Indira Gandhi, and said it was "rare" to come across a public servant who had "the qualities of the head and heart".

"I have learnt of the passing away of Dr. P.C. Alexander with great sadness," the prime minister said in a statement.

Alexander, who also served Rajiv Gandhi briefly, died at a hospital in Chennai Wednesday morning, family sources said. He was 90.

"Dr. Alexander was one of our most outstanding civil servants. To each of the numerous public positions he held, he brought not only his fierce commitment to the public good but also a quiet grace and dignity," he added.

"It was a tribute to his extraordinary abilities that his advice was sought by successive prime ministers," he said.

"It is indeed rare to come across a public servant with the qualities of the head and heart that Dr. Alexander possessed," said Singh.
