The grave-digger
Once, as I was burying one of my dead
selves, the grave-digger came by and said to me, Of all those who come here to
bury, you alone I like.
Said I, You please me exceedingly, but why do you
like me
Because, said he, They come weeping and go weeping you only come
laughing and go laughing.
Hey ! Man there will come a time
all health is gone
all wealth is gone
all glory gone
all friends gone
even your shadow won't follow you
My shadow scares me
(Poet unknown)
I was minding myself when the monster appeared
He was ten steps behind me, and gaining I feared.
I thought if I shunned him, he might disappear,
But luck would not have it-his steps only neared.
I rounded the corner and the closer he came,
Atrocious and frightening, and shouting my name.
I thought if I shunned him, he might do the same,
But his shadow was growing; he would not be tamed
I stopped in my steps and turned swift around.
I confronted the monster and he made not a sound.
He crumbled and shriveled and fell to the ground,
Then his crumbs blew away not a piece could be found
