വാഷിംഗ്ടണ്‍ ഡി.സി.: വാഷിംഗ്ടണ്‍ ഡി.സി.യില്‍ ഇന്ന് മെയ് 25ന് നടന്ന നാഷ്ണല്‍ ജിയോഗ്രാഫിക്ക് ബി മത്സരത്തില്‍ റിഷി നായര്‍ക്ക് വിജയ കിരീടം.

റിഷി നായര്‍ (12) ഫ്‌ളോറിഡ വില്യംസ് മാഗനറ്റ് മിഡില്‍ സ്‌ക്കൂള്‍ ആറാം ക്ലാസ് വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിയാണ്.

ഫൈനല്‍ മത്സരത്തില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്ത അവസാന പത്തുപേരില്‍ 7 പേരും ഇന്ത്യന്‍-അമേരിക്കന്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളായിരുന്നു.

ഒന്നാം സ്ഥാനത്തിനര്‍ഹയായ റിഷി നായരെ കൂടാതെ രണ്ടും മൂന്നും സ്ഥാനങ്ങള്‍ യഥാക്രമം ഇന്ത്യന്‍ അമേരിക്കന്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികലായ സകിത് ജോനല്‍ അഗഡ(14),(വെസ്റ്റ് ഫോര്‍ഡ്, മാസ്സചുസെറ്റ്‌സ്), കപില്‍ നെയ്ഥന്‍(12), ഹൂവര്‍ അലബാമ) എന്നിവര്‍ക്കാണ് ലഭിച്ചത്.

റിഷി നായര്‍ക്ക് (50,000), സകിത് ജോനല്‍(25,000), ഡോളര്‍ വീതമാണ് സ്‌ക്കോളര്‍ഷിപ്പു ലഭിക്കുക.

നാഷ്ണല്‍ ജിയോഗ്രാഫിക്ക് ബി മത്സരങ്ങളില്‍ തുടര്‍ച്ചയായി അഞ്ചാം തവണയാണ് ഇന്ത്യന്‍-അമേരിക്കന്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ ഒന്നാം സ്ഥാനത്തിനര്‍ഹരാകുന്നത്. 

ഫൈനല്‍ മത്സരത്തില്‍ ഇര്‍വിംഗ് ടെക്‌സസ്സില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള പ്രണയ് വരദയും പങ്കെടുത്തിരുന്നു.

അമ്പതു സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും, ഡിസ്ട്രിക്റ്റ് ഓഫ് കൊളംബിയ യു.എസ്. അറ്റ്‌ലാന്റിക്ക, ഫസഫിക്ക് ടെറിട്ടറികളിലും ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ട 11,000 സ്‌ക്കൂളുകളില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള മൂന്നു മില്യന്‍ വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികളില്‍ നിന്നാണ് റിഷി നായര്‍ ഒന്നാം സ്ഥാനത്തിനര്‍ഹയായത്.

Indian Americans swept the top three spots at the 2016 National Geographic Bee May 25 in Washington, D.C., with 12-year-old Rishi Nair claiming the top spot.

Nair, of Seffner, Fla., was joined by 14-year-old Saketh Jonnalagadda, of Westford, Mass.; and 12-year-old Hoover, Ala., resident Kapil Nathan in the top three.

The winners of 54 state-level competitions convened in the nation’s capital May 23 for a preliminary round to determine the finalists. Seven of the 10 finalists who competed for the bee’s ultimate prize were Indian Americans. A total of 3 million students from 11,000 schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, U.S. Atlantic and Pacific territories and Department of Defense Dependents Schools took part in the 2016 bee.

A sixth grader at Williams Magnet Middle School, Nair, by winning the 28th annual event, received a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and an all-expenses paid trip to Alaska for a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic eight-day adventure.

The expedition will take place aboard the National Geographic Sea Lion, and will include a stop at Glacier Bay National Park, in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

For coming in second, Jonnalagadda, an eighth grader at Stony Brook Middle School, earned a $25,000 college scholarship. Nathan, a sixth grader at Brock’s Gap Intermediate School who was also a top 10 finalists in 2015, earned a $10,000 college scholarship for coming in third.

The final round, moderated by humorist and journalist Mo Rocca, between Nair and Jonnalagadda consisted of seven questions. The eventual winner got off to an early lead by correctly answering “Switzerland” to the question, “The Gotthard Base Tunnel, expected to open in early June, will be the world’s longest rail tunnel. This tunnel is located in which country?”

The runner-up failed to answer the first question, but got even when Nair failed to answer “Cape Byron” to the fifth question, “An active lighthouse is located on a cape that is the easternmost point of mainland Australia. Name this cape.”

It then came down to the final question, “A new marine sanctuary will protect sharks and other wildlife around Isla Wolf in which archipelago in the Pacific Ocean?” Nair correctly answered, “Galápagos Islands,” to claim the title.

Nair is just the second Florida-based student to win the National Geography Bee. Palm Harbor, Fla.-based Aadith Moorthy was the first to do so in 2010. Nair is the fifth straight Indian American to win the bee. Rahul Nagvekar in 2012, Sathwik Karnik in 2013, Akhil Rekulapelli in 2014 and Karan Menon in 2015 were the previous four winners.

The seven other finalists, which included Indian Americans Rishi Kumar, 10, of Maryland; Pranay Varada, 13, of Irving, Texas; Samanyu Dixit, 12, of Matthews, N.C.; and Ashwin Sivakumar, 11, of Beaverton, Ore., each won $500 for making it to the top 10.

The complete final round of the bee will air on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD May 27 at 8 p.m.
