Poyakayel Punnoose Kurian (Joy-83) passed away in New York
New York: Poyakayel Punnoose Kurian (Joy-83), one of the
earliest settlers in New Yok City, passed
away on February 4. He was the third of eight children born to Sosamma and
Punnoose of the Assanparambil family in Thiruvanvandoor, Thiruvalla.
He married Deenamma Mathew, the oldest of five children from the Plamkoodathil family in Eraviperoor, Thiruvalla. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 17th last year.
They have two daughters, Betty and Beni. Betty is married to Charles (Sunil) Eapen and
they have a son, Zachariah, 18. Beni has three daughters, Julianne, 13, Jadyn,
11, and Jordan, 7.
Kurian came to the US in 1972. He was an ambitious, driven, dedicated businessman. His generosity and kindness are what he will be most remembered for. His infectious smile and jovial nature endeared him to all. He and his partners opened the first Indian grocery store in the Rockland County area in 1982. He also bought and sold real estate property, all the while supporting his family near and far.
He was an avid chess player. His grandkids called him ‘funny
grandpa.’ He was a person who made everyone feel like they were a part of his
family. He was a member and supporter of the Jacobite church in Yonkers.
His siblings include Mathew (deceased), Markose (deceased),
Philip (deceased), Punnoose (deceased), Abraham, Chacko and Leelamma.
His brothers-in-law include Mathai, Kuriakose, Jacob Mathew and his sister-in-law, Alicekutty.
The wake service is scheduled for February 10, Friday 5 pm to 9 pm at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Service, 321 South Main St, New City, NY-10956
The funeral service will be held on February 11 Saturday at 9 am to 11:30 am at Michael Higgins Funeral Service.
It follows the internment at Germonds Presbyterian Cemetery, 46 Germonds Road, New City, NY-10956
