മൊണ്ട്രീറ്റ്, നോര്‍ത്ത് കരലിന: ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിനാളുകളെ ക്രൈസ്തവ വിശ്വാസത്തിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടു വന്ന ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഏ റ്റവും തീക്ഷ്ണതയുള്ള വചന പ്രഘോഷകന്‍ ബില്ലി ഗ്രഹാം (99) അന്തരിച്ചു. അമേരിക്കയുടെ പാസ്റ്റര്‍, പ്രൊട്ടസ്റ്റന്റ് പോപ്പ് എന്നീ അപര നാമങ്ങളില്‍ അറിയപ്പെട്ട അദ്ധേഹം പ്രസിഡന്റ് ഹാരി ട്രുമാന്‍ മുതലുള്ള പ്രസിഡന്റുമാരുടെ ഉപദേശകനായിരുന്നു.

1950-കളില്‍ ന്യു യോര്‍ക്ക് ക്വീന്‍സില്‍ രണ്ടാഴ്ചത്തെ സുവിശേഷ പ്രഘോഷണത്തിനെത്തിയ ഗ്രഹാമിന്റെ വാക് ധോരണിയില്‍ ജനം ഒഴുകിയെത്തി. ജനപ്രവാഹം നിലക്കത്തതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് മാസങ്ങളോളം അവിടെ അദ്ദേഹം സുവിശേഷ പ്രസംഗം നടത്തി.

വിര്‍ജീനിയ, ആനി, റൂത്ത്, വില്യം ഫ്രാങ്ക്ളിന്‍ കകക, നെല്‍സണ്‍ എന്നിവരാണ് ബില്ലി ഗ്രഹാംറൂത്ത് ഗ്രഹാം ദമ്പതികളുടെ മക്കള്‍. മകന്‍ ഫ്രാങ്ക്ളിന്‍ ആണ് ബില്ലി ഗ്രഹാം ഇവാഞ്ചലിസ്റ്റ് അസോസിയേഷനു നേത്രുത്വം നല്‍കുന്നത്.

1916 നവംബര്‍ 7 നായിരുന്നു ബില്ലിഗ്രഹാമിന്റെ ജനനം. 2005 ല്‍ വിരമിക്കുന്നതുവരെ ആറ് പതിറ്റാണ്ട് ടെലിവിഷനിലൂടെ നടത്തിയ വചനപ്രഘോഷണം ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിനാളുകളുടെ ജീവിത പരിവര്‍ത്തനത്തിന് കാരണമായി. 185 രാജ്യങ്ങളിലായി 215 മില്യണ്‍ ജനങ്ങള്‍ ബില്ലിഗ്രഹാമിന്റെ പ്രസംഗം ശ്രവിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ സന്ദേശം അനേകരിലേക്ക് എത്തിച്ച ബില്ലി ഗ്രഹാം ഇന്ത്യയിലും നിരവധി തവണ സന്ദര്‍ശനം നടത്തി

സതേണ്‍ ബാപ്റ്റിസ്റ്റ് ശുശ്രൂഷകനായാണ് ബില്ലിഗ്രഹം പ്രവര്‍ത്തനമാരംഭിച്ചത്.

1990-കളുടെ ആരംഭം മുതല്‍ ഇദ്ദേഹം പലവിധ ആരോഗ്യപ്രശ്നങ്ങള്‍ നേരിട്ടിരുന്നു. എങ്കിലും തന്റെ ശുശ്രൂഷ തുടര്‍ന്നു. ബില്ലി ഗ്രഹാമിന്റെ ശുശ്രൂഷയില്‍ സുപ്രധാന പങ്കു വഹിച്ച വ്യക്തി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാര്യ റൂത്ത് ആയിരുന്നു. അവര്‍ 2007-ല്‍ മരിച്ചു

ഐസനോവര്‍, ലിന്‍ഡണ്‍ ജോണ്‍സണ്‍, റിച്ചാര്‍ഡ് നിക്‌സണ്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ അമേരിക്കന്‍ പ്രസിഡന്റ്മാരുടെ 'സ്പിരിച്വല്‍ അഡൈ്വസറാ'യിരുന്നു ബില്ലി ഗ്രഹാം.

ലളിതമായ ഭാഷയില്‍ സുവിശേഷം പ്രസംഗിക്കുന്നതില്‍ ബില്ലി ഗ്രഹാം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന അപാരമായ കഴിവ് പ്രശംസനീയമായിരുന്നു.
ലോക പ്രസിദ്ധ മാരാമണ്‍ കണ്‍വന്‍ഷനിലും ബില്ലഗ്രഹാമിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം ചൈതന്യം പകര്‍ന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്.

Growing up Catholic in New York in the 1950s, the Catholic we most identified with was Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, the first televangelist. The Protestant we most clearly revered was Rev. Billy Graham. In both cases, they had no rival.
 
For Catholics, Graham was more than just the titular head of the Protestant community, he was a man who inspired us. He was a man of prayer, and his deep spirituality was contagious. Moreover, his ecumenical efforts were legion.
 
When Graham was at his peak, our culture was Christian-friendly, allowing him to follow a decidedly pastoral approach. Those ministers who came after him were forced to take a more aggressive public stance, owing to the advent of the culture war.
 
I have one fond remembrance of him. In the late 1990s, he contacted me about some cruel story that had circulated about him—it made him out to be an anti-Catholic bigot. The story was completely bogus. I appreciated how seriously he took this issue, and how quickly he responded. 
 
Rev. Billy Graham will be missed. I am happy that he is with our Lord.

(CNN)Evangelist Billy Graham -- a confidant to presidents, a guiding light to generations of American evangelicals and a globe-trotting preacher who converted millions to Christianity -- died Wednesday at the age of 99, his spokesman confirmed to CNN.

Graham passed away at his home in Montreat, North Carolina, spokesman Jeremy Blume said.

The skinny preacher with the booming voice evangelized to nearly 215 million people over six decades and prayed with US presidents from Harry Truman to Barack Obama.

Several presidents, including Lyndon Johnson, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, relied closely on his spiritual counsel

He was tall and handsome, with a disarming aw-shucks demeanor and a Southern twang to his voice. But Graham's influence, historians say, was monumental. Some called him "America's pastor," others referred to him as the "Protestant pope."

Graham is reported to have persuaded more than 3 million people to commit their lives to Christianity and his preaching was heard in 185 of the world's 195 countries, according to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

"He was probably the dominant religious leader of his era; no more than one or two popes, perhaps one or two other people, could come close to what he achieved," said William Martin, a former historian at Rice University and the author of "A Prophet with Honor: The Billy Graham Story."
