വെര്‍ജിനിയ: 2016 ല്‍ പ്രസിഡന്റ് ട്രമ്പിന്റെ വിജയത്തിന് ചുക്കാന്‍ പിടിച്ച തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പു കമ്മിറ്റി ചെയര്‍മാന്‍ പോള്‍ മനഫോര്‍ട്ടിനെ 47 മാസം ജയിലടയ്ക്കാന്‍ വെര്‍ജീനിയ ഫെഡറല്‍ ജഡജി ടി.എസ്. എല്ലിയറ്റ് മാര്‍ച്ച് 7 വ്യാഴാഴ്ച വൈകീട്ട് ഉത്തരവിട്ടു. ഇതിനു പുറമെ 50,000 ഡോളര്‍ പിഴയടക്കണമെന്നും ഉത്തരവില്‍ പറയുന്നു.
പത്തുവര്‍ഷം തടവു ലഭിക്കാവുന്ന മറ്റൊരു കേസ്സില്‍ വാഷിംഗ്ടണ്‍ ഡി.സി. ഡിസ്ട്രിക്റ്റ് കോടതിയില്‍ വിധി പറയാതിരിക്കെയാണ് ഇന്നത്തെ വിധി.
ബാങ്ക് തട്ടിപ്പ്, ടാക്‌സി വെട്ടിപ്പ്, വിദശബാങ്ക് എക്കൗണ്ട് ഫയല്‍ ചെയ്യാതിരുന്നത് തുടങ്ങിയ കുറ്റങ്ങള്‍ക്കാണ് പോള്‍ ശിക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്.
കോടതി മുറിയില്‍ വീല്‍ചെയറില്‍ എത്തിയ 69 വയസ്സുക്കാരനായ പോളിനോട് ദയവുണ്ടാകണം എന്ന അഭ്യര്‍ത്ഥനക്ക് കോടതി പരിഗണിച്ചില്ല. ചെയ്ത തെറ്റില്‍ പശ്ചാതപിക്കാതിരുന്നത് ജഡ്ജിയെ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തിയതായി വിധിന്യായത്തില്‍ പറയുന്നു.
പോളിന് സംഭവിച്ചത് ദുഃഖകരമാണ്; എന്നാല്‍ മാപ്പു നല്‍കാന്‍ എനിക്കു കഴിയുകയില്ല. ട്രമ്പ് പ്രതികരിച്ചു.
ഇന്നത്തെ കേസ്സില്‍ പോളിന് 38 മാസം ജയിലില്‍ കഴിയണ്ടി വരും. 9 മാസം ഇളവ് ലഭിക്കും. എത്ര ഉന്നതനാണെങ്കിലും നിയമത്തിനു മുമ്പില്‍ ചെയ്ത തെറ്റിന് ശിക്ഷ അനുഭവിക്കേണ്ടിവരുമെന്നാണ് കോടതി വിധി ചൂണ്ടികാണിക്കുന്നത്.
