പതിനഞ്ചുകാരിയുടെ പ്രസവം; മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ അറസ്റ്റ്; പിതാവിന്റെ ആത്മഹത്യ

കാലിഫോര്‍ണിയ: 48 വയസ്സുള്ള ജസ്ഗീര്‍ സിംഗ് ധില്ലന്റെ ആത്മഹത്യ അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഇന്ത്യക്കാര്‍ക്ക് ഒരു പാഠമാകേണ്ടതാണ്. ഈ മാസം ഏഴിനു മരിച്ച നിലയില്‍ കണ്ട ധില്ലന്റെ സംസ്‌കാരം 14-നു നടത്തി.
ബേക്കേഴ്സ് ഹില്ലിലായിരുന്നു കുടുംബം താമസിച്ചിരുന്നത്. 15 വയസ്സുള്ള പുത്രി ഗര്‍ഭിണിയായതോടെയാണ് അവരുടെ ജീവിതം തകിടം മറിയുന്നത്. ഗര്‍ഭിണിയാനെന്ന കാര്യം പുത്രി ആരേയും അറിയിച്ചില്ല. അയഞ്ഞ വസ്ത്രമുടുത്ത് വീട്ടുകാരില്‍ നിന്നുവരെ വിവരം മറച്ചുവെച്ചു.
കഴിഞ്ഞ നവംബറില്‍ അവള്‍ ഒരു കുട്ടിയെ വീട്ടിലെ ബാത്ത്റൂമില്‍ പ്രസവിച്ചു. ആര്‍ക്കെങ്കിലും ദത്തെടുക്കാന്‍ നല്‍കുകയാണെന്നു പറഞ്ഞ് അമ്മ ബിയാന്ത് സിംഗ്, കുട്ടിയെ വാങ്ങി. തുടര്‍ന്ന് അവര്‍ കുട്ടിയെ ബാത്ത് ടബില്‍ മുക്കിക്കൊന്നു. കുട്ടിയുടെ ശരീരം ഒരു ബാഗിലാക്കി വച്ചു.
അന്നു രാത്രി ജസ്ഗിര്‍ സിംഗും മരുമകന്‍ ബക്ഷിന്ദര്‍ സിംഗ് മാനും (23) ചേര്‍ന്നു വീടിനു പുറകിലെ തോട്ടത്തില്‍ മൃതദേഹം കുഴിച്ചിട്ടു.
കുടുംബത്തിന് ചീത്തപ്പേര് ഉണ്ടാകാതിരിക്കാനാണ് കുട്ടിയെ കൊന്നതെന്ന് ബിയാന്ത് സിംഗ് സമ്മതിച്ചതായി പോലീസ് റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടില്‍ പറയുന്നു.
സംഭവം കഴിഞ്ഞ് മാസങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ശേഷമാണ് പോലീസ് രംഗത്തുവരുന്നത്. പിതാവ് തന്നെ കൊല്ലുമെന്ന് ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതായും കഷണം കഷണമാക്കുമെന്നു പറഞ്ഞതായും പുത്രി അധ്യാപകരോട് പറഞ്ഞു. തന്നെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചുവിടുമെന്നു ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നുവെന്നും അറിയിച്ചു.
അധ്യാപകര്‍ പോലീസില്‍ അറിയിച്ചു. കഴിഞ്ഞ മാസം അവസാനംവീട്ടിലെത്തിയ പോലീസ് കുട്ടിയെ ചോദ്യംചെയ്തു. ശിശുവിന്റെ ജഡം പിറകില്‍ കുഴിച്ചിട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നു തന്റെ സഹോദരന്‍ പറഞ്ഞതായി പുത്രി പോലീസിനെ അറിയിച്ചു. തുടര്‍ന്നു പോലീസ് പരിശോധനയില്‍ മൃതദേഹം കണ്ടെടുത്തു.
ജസ്ഗിറിനേയും ബിയാന്തിനേയും അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തു. കൊലയ്ക്ക് കൂട്ടുനിന്നുവെന്നും കുട്ടിയോട് ക്രൂരത കാട്ടിയെന്നുമായിരുന്നു ജസ്ഗിറിനെതിരേയുള്ള ചാര്‍ജ്. അയാള്‍ക്ക് പിന്നീട് ജാമ്യം കിട്ടി. കൊലക്കേസ് ചാര്‍ജ് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ബിയാന്തിന് ജാമ്യം കിട്ടിയില്ല.
കുട്ടി ചാപിള്ളയാണെന്നാണ് കരുതിയതെന്നാണ് ബിയാന്ത് ആദ്യം പോലീസിനെട് പറഞ്ഞത്. എന്നാല്‍ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യലില്‍ കുട്ടിയെ ടബ്ബില്‍ കമഴ്ത്തിപ്പിടിച്ചുവെന്ന് സമ്മതിച്ചു. ക്രമേണ കുഞ്ഞ് നിശ്ചലമായി.
സ്‌കൂളിലെ ഒരു സീനിയര്‍ സ്റ്റുഡന്റുമായിട്ടാണ് തന്റെ ബന്ധമെന്ന് പുത്രി പറഞ്ഞു. എന്നാല്‍ തന്റെ മരുമകന്‍ ബക്ഷിന്ദര്‍തന്നെയാണ് ഇതിനു പിന്നിലെന്ന് ജസ്ഗിര്‍ പോലീസിനോട് പറഞ്ഞു.
അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്ത ബക്ഷിന്ദര്‍ പാല്‍ സിംഗിനെ ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് മോണിറ്ററിംഗ് ഉപകരണം ഘടിപ്പിച്ച് ജാമ്യത്തില്‍ വിട്ടു. എന്നാല്‍ ഉപകരണം മുറിച്ച് അയാള്‍ സ്ഥലംവിട്ടു. ഇമിഗ്രേഷന്‍ അധികൃതരും ഇപ്പോള്‍ അയാളെ തെരയുന്നു.
ജസ്ഗിറിന്റെ സംസ്‌കാര വേളയില്‍ ഭാര്യയെ പോലീസിന്റെ അകമ്പടിയോടെ കൊണ്ടുവന്നിരുന്നു. ഇതിനിടെ ജസ്ഗിറിന്റെ സുഹൃത്ത് സത്വീര്‍ ബ്രാര്‍ ഗോ ഫണ്ട് മീയില്‍ കൂടി കുടുംബത്തിനു വേണ്ടി തുക സമാഹരിക്കുന്നു. 30,000-ല്‍പരം ഡോളര്‍ ഇതിനകം ലഭിച്ചു. ജസ്ഗിറിനു ഭാര്യയും രണ്ടു മക്കളും മാതാപിതാക്കളുമുണ്ടെന്ന് അതില്‍ പറയുന്നു.
ചിലര്‍ ഫണ്ട് സമാഹരണത്തെ എതിര്‍ക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട്. അപ്പന്‍ മരിച്ചു. അമ്മ ജയിലിലുമായി. മകളെ ചൈല്‍ഡ് പ്രൊട്ടക്ഷന്‍ സര്‍വീസ് കൊണ്ടുപോയി. പിന്നെ പനം എന്തിനു എന്നാണവരുടെ ചോദ്യം
തങ്ങളുടേ കുട്ടികളൊന്നും ഇത്തരം അബദ്ധങ്ങളില്‍ ചെന്നു ചാടില്ലെന്ന ചിന്താഗതി പുലര്‍ത്തുന്നവരാണ് ഇന്ത്യക്കാര്‍ മിക്കവരും. പക്ഷെ സ്‌കൂളിലെത്തുമ്പോള്‍ കുട്ടികള്‍ സാധാരണ അമേരിക്കക്കാരായി മാറുന്നുവെന്ന യാഥാര്‍ത്ഥ്യം നാം മിക്കപ്പോഴും മറക്കുന്നു. ഇത്തരം സംഭവങ്ങളെ എങ്ങനെ നേരിടാമെന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് വ്യക്തമായ ധാരണയാവട്ടെ നമുക്കില്ലതാനും.

അധ്യാപകര്‍ പോലീസില്‍ അറിയിച്ചു. കഴിഞ്ഞ മാസം അവസാനംവീട്ടിലെത്തിയ പോലീസ് കുട്ടിയെ ചോദ്യംചെയ്തു. ശിശുവിന്റെ ജഡം പിറകില്‍ കുഴിച്ചിട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നു തന്റെ സഹോദരന്‍ പറഞ്ഞതായി പുത്രി പോലീസിനെ അറിയിച്ചു. തുടര്‍ന്നു പോലീസ് പരിശോധനയില്‍ മൃതദേഹം കണ്ടെടുത്തു.
ജസ്ഗിറിനേയും ബിയാന്തിനേയും അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്തു. കൊലയ്ക്ക് കൂട്ടുനിന്നുവെന്നും കുട്ടിയോട് ക്രൂരത കാട്ടിയെന്നുമായിരുന്നു ജസ്ഗിറിനെതിരേയുള്ള ചാര്‍ജ്. അയാള്‍ക്ക് പിന്നീട് ജാമ്യം കിട്ടി. കൊലക്കേസ് ചാര്‍ജ് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ബിയാന്തിന് ജാമ്യം കിട്ടിയില്ല.

We are partly responsible for the suicide of Jagsir Singh with our attitude towards race relations. If a member of our community marries a person from a different culture or religion, many get uncomfortable. If you feel uncomfortable that means you still have vestiges of racism in you, and you are partly responsible for the death of Jagsir Singh. He committed suicide as he could not face the society or his community and their attitude towards him after the incident. The suicide of Jagsir sing is the proof that how much the influence of race and denomination still on the mind of Indians.
Suicide is not an answer to any problem. Situations like this can happen to anybody. We do not have control over things that happen in our life. We have control over how we respond to situations in our life.
My son Jerry asked me how I will react to his marrying a person outside Malayalee community. I expressed my desire to have him marry somebody from the Malayalee community, but said I will accept whoever he chooses as his life partner.
Priests and pastors and society leaders are partly responsible for our current thinking on race relations. These leaders out of their own insecurities about their future income, position or power, taught that the community they belong to is the best, and moving out of the community in marriage relation is against God’s will or is ‘mathaparivarthanam’ by other groups. Neither is true.
Let us go to Old Testament times. God gave the Laws to Israel through Moses. These Laws can’t be violated, and if anybody violates it, there will be consequences including death. One of the Laws was that they should not have marriage relations with foreigners living among them for them not to follow the gods of the foreigners. So they blindly followed the rule without recognizing the purpose for giving this law. They failed to see that the great, great grandmother of Jesus was a Black lady named Rehab a foreigner among them, and that there were several foreign women in the genealogy of Jesus Christ.
Let us take another example from OT. Even before Samson was born, instruction were given that he must grow up as a Nazirite with strict rules to follow- do not touch or taste or look. When Samson grew up he fell in love with a Philistine girl, and expressed his desire to marry her. His parents asked him why there are no girls in Israel that you look for girls among forbidden groups of uncircumcised Philistines their enemies. Samson was adamant that he want to marry this girl. So their parents decided to go and see the girl. Now, it is recorded in there by Holy Spirit that his parents did not recognize that this decision of Samson came from the Lord.
Normally if we do not like something in scripture, we close our eyes and act as if we did not see it and move forward. No group is immune from this phenomenon. If we do not like a person or group, we try to evade them. If we do not like a show we turn the TV off. These are all the idiosyncrasies that we follow due to lack of courage to face the truth or reality. As long as we continue to do this, such suicide will continue in our community and we are partly responsible for such suicides.
So teach your children our values and culture but if they choose another culture, encourage them to marry anybody they choose. Many children in our community are staying single as they are afraid to get married. They are afraid that they will not be able to meet the expectations of parents or society if they get married. So encourage our children to marry as God’s ways are mysterious. It is possible that children and blessings can come to life from unexpected corners. Children are a blessing from God, and it is children that keep our memory alive, and children are our rewards in life. Do not close doors to more children in your life.
