The Indian American Kerala Cultural and Civic Center will organize a two-day Technology Summit for Kerala in conjunction with its 22nd Annual Award Banquet in New York City. American Malayalees constitute a community of about 300,000 in USA alone. Canada has another 100,000 Malayalees. Most of the them are in healthcare, but a significant number serves in core technology areas as academicians, technologists, entrepreneurs and businessmen.

According to the convener of the summit, Dr. Thomas Abraham, a material scientist and nanotechnologist by profession, if India can achieve as the first country to successfully get a spacecraft into the Martian orbit on its maiden attempt at one-tenth of what a similar mission would cost NASA or ESA, India can be a low cost producer of emerging technology products.

Dr. Abraham said, “While Kerala is trying to catch up with other states in India in information technology and biotechnology, Kerala must explore the possibility of leapfrogging to the next generation technologies including, nanotechnology, nanobio convergence technologies, nanomedicine, biomedical, alternative energy generation and storage, medical devices and products, high end IT and other next generation products from chemical and physical sciences and pharmaceutical industry.”

After the India’s liberalization policies in the 1990s and the internet revolution,  Indian companies have been concentrating on new business and job creation with call centers and IT. However, there are opportunities now in emerging and new generation technologies.

“I strongly believe that for Kerala, adoption of new generation technologies with high value added products are the only option to create more jobs because it is much more expensive to do business in Kerala compared to other states especially in the mass production of low-end products,” Dr. Abraham added.

With this view in mind, the organizers are reaching out Indian American Malayalee scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists who could contribute for Kerala by helping initiating new technology related ventures. The organizers believe that Kerala can do it because it has the knowledge power.

The Summit will attract 50 such leading personalities for a 2 day conclave to discuss these initiatives and opportunities. A second meeting will be held in Thiruvananthapuram in mid January, 2015 with participants from all over the world and Kerala. The meeting will also look at the research angle for new generation technologies and have a separate meeting with Kerala’s Higher Education Council.

Position papers to create new ideas in each of the core technology areas (all important technology areas to be identified) will be prepared and circulated in advance.  Disruptive and out of the box technologies will also be considered as technology and business opportunities for Kerala.

The summit hosted by the Kerala Center (Elmont, New York) and will be held at the LaGuardia Plaza Hotel in New York City on November 14th and 15th. Those interested to share a new technology area may write to the organizers. A session on “Technology Hub and Kick-start” is also scheduled for young entrepreneurs who already have ideas for potential commercialization of a new technology or product.
