My Sweet Kerala (Poem: Lebrin Paruthimoottil,Dallas)

Left some time back
Taking myself and all I have with me
Did not turn back
Cuz I was looking for the land of the free.

Started living on the new land
Worried and busy with life’s struggles
Trying to gain the upper hand with my left hand
Scraping by trying to survive in troubles.

Nostalgia started hitting me
The good times, the bad times, and in between
Memories came back that I tried to flee
Dreams of my homeland, the land that is green.

Desired to go back
Wanted to taste again the tasty snack
Wished to go and get some items for my backpack
Wanted to see again the good old rail track.

But there were many issues facing me
COVID, Money, and all the other things
Was not sure if I could have again that glee
Was not sure if I could cut off the attached strings.

Finally it happened
I was able to fulfill my long-time dream
My body changed and my heart gladdened
It was the end of my long-time daydream.

The flight there was long and hard
The turbulence was not a pleasant feeling
The food and the sleep had my mind scarred
But soon I reached the land of my healing.

I stepped out into the land of my home
Saw the people, food, and everything else in the land of masala
Was only a few days, but it was better than Rome
It’s my home, my sweet Kerala.
