ഓസ്റ്റിൻ, ടെക്സസ്: ഓസ്റ്റിനിൽ ആറു   മണിക്കൂർ നീണ്ടു നിന്ന ബന്ദി നാടകത്തിനൊടുവിൽ വനിതാ ഡോക്ടർ വെടിയേറ്റു മരിച്ചു. ഇന്ത്യാക്കാരനായ ഡോ. ഭരത് നറുമാഞ്ചി, 43, സ്വയം വെടിവച്ച് മരിച്ചു.

ചിൽഡ്രൻസ് മെഡിക്കൽ ഗ്രുപ്പ് എന്ന കുട്ടികളുടെ ചികിത്സ കേന്ദ്രത്തിലാണ് സംഭവം.  കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട ഡോ. കാതറിൻ ലിന്ഡലിയും, 43, ഉം ഡോ ഭരതും പീഡിയാട്രീഷ്യന്മാരാണ്. ഇരുവരും തമ്മിൽ മുൻപരിചയം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല എന്നാണു കരുതുന്നത്.

ചൊവ്വാഴ്ച (ജനുവരി 26) വൈകിട്ട് നാലരയോടെ പോലീസെത്തുമ്പോൾ അഞ്ചു പേരെ ബന്ദികളാക്കിയിരുന്നു. ഡോ. കാതറിൻ ഒഴിച്ചുള്ളവർ രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു, അഥവാ രക്ഷപ്പെടാൻ സമ്മതിച്ചു.

ഒരാഴ്ച മുന്പ ഈ ഓഫീസിൽ വോളന്റിയറായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കാൻ ഡോ. ഭരത് വന്നിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ അത് ലഭിച്ചില്ല. അതിനു പ്രതികാരമാണോ അക്രമമെന്നു  വ്യക്തമല്ല.

അതീവ ഗുരുതരമായ കാൻസർ ബാധിച്ച വ്യക്തിയാണ് ഭരത്. ഏതാനും ആഴ്ച്ചകളെ ഇനി ജീവിക്കൂ എന്ന് ഡോക്‌ ടർമാർ വിധി എഴുതിയിരുന്നതായി റിപ്പോർട്ടുകളിൽ പറയുന്നു.

ഹാവായിയിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഡോ. ഭാരത് റസിഡൻസി ചെയ്തത്. അവിടെ വീട്ടിലെ കലഹത്തിന് ഒരു കേസ് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീടത് കോടതി തള്ളി. തുടർന്ന് മുൻ ഭാര്യയുമായി കുട്ടിയെ ചൊല്ലി കസ്റ്റഡി പോരാട്ടവും നടന്നു.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department confirmed two doctors died following a reported hostage situation at a pediatrician's office that lasted about six hours on Jan. 26.

The APD said the SWAT situation happened at 1912 W. 35th St. near MoPac Expressway and 35th Street, which is the same location as Children's Medical Group, a pediatric office. 

APD said on Jan. 27 that the victim of this incident was Dr. Katherine Lindley Dodson, 43. The suspect, according to APD, was Dr.  Bharat Narumanchi, 43.

When police officers first responded to the scene, they learned that there were five hostages, including Dr. Dodson. Several were able to escape and others were later allowed to leave, leaving Dodson as the sole hostage. 

The APD said Dr. Dodson was killed by Dr. Narumanchi, who then later shot himself. Police said Dr. Narumanchi had been to this office a week earlier and applied for a volunteer position. They said Dr. Narumanchi was a pediatrician who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Dr. Narumanchi was denied the volunteer position and police are looking into whether that may have prompted him to return armed. Hostages reported to officers that Narumanchi was armed with a pistol and what appeared to be a shotgun and he had two duffel bags, according to APD. 

Dr. Dodson and Dr. Narumanchi did not appear to have any prior relations outside of his visit the week prior to the reported hostage incident, APD said.

Hostage negotiators made several attempts to make contact with Narumanchi, but he was not responsive. Later, the two doctors were found with gunshot wounds.

This is Austin’s fourth homicide of 2021, according to APD.
