Welcome to Ramayana Masam

Ramayanam is the first piece of written literature in history. It took the world 10,000 years to develop alphabets and words more than our most ancient Indian literacy culture. In the history of the world, literature started with prose and are mostly based on stories. But in India our great masters were great poets, they wrote everything in poetry. Ramayanam is called adi kavyam.

It is not mere poetry but contains very deep significance of spiritual wisdom. Outside we can see that a story belongs to a family or a kingdom but inside it is full of spiritual knowledge which is a message to this world.

So Ramayana should not be read as a custom which we followed, but should be read from the heart with a surrendering mind, then only the wisdom will flow from our heart. It is said that Ramayana's writer Sage Valmeeki sang this great epic from deep feelings of pain which he felt. Once he was going to take a bath early in the morning, on the way he crossed a forest where he saw a hunter aiming at two birds who were singing and enjoying the dawn. When he looked the hunter had already shot one bird, the pain of the bird touched the heart of the Sage and he just uttered to the hunter, "Ma Nishada" oh hunter don’t hurt the bird." Then when he introspected he discovered that the whole world was suffering because of the cruelty called 'hurting."

In Ramayana, Ravana represents the 'hurting" character because of his cruel mind as he destroyed himself and his people. Rama the hero represents 'respect.’ His respect brings harmony everywhere. Rama respected his enemy too. Many chances he has given enemies to change their hurting mind. So Ramayanam is very relevant to today’s world and gives a great message; “respect others and don’t hurt their feelings or freedom." Today we can see that the whole world is suffering because of hurting immatured by Ravana’s mind. Today Ravana appears in the form of violence which is seen everywhere. We need a Mind like Rama who can create Respect and Harmony; this is the real solution for a peaceful world. When the world insists to love thy neighbour, Rama requests to respect your neighbour. That looks more logical because to love you should know someone but to respect we don’t have to know the person. When an unknown guest comes into our home we respect them in a way that creates harmony. That is why Gandhiji said we should establish Rama Rajyam. What he meant was a world where everyone would respect each other. Let us work together for it.
