Harvard
University's banishing of
Janata party leader Subramanian Swamy from teaching the summer courses at the
school has been long overdue said George Abraham, Secretary-General of Indian
National Overseas Congress. 'This person has called for the 'destruction of the
mosques and disenfranchisement of non-Hindus in India'.
Mr. Swamy has been spewing the venom of hatred and bigotry against the minorities
on his many tours to the United
States dividing the NRI community along
religious lines. Under the cover of freedom of speech, over the years, he has
been demonizing certain religious groups that has the potential to incite
violence and do great harm.
Harvard University's
decision is bold and courageous and we all expect such a high standard from a
premier University in the United
States.
It is a prudent decision for others to emulate especially by some organizations
in the US
that continue to entertain such divisive figures onto their premises. As the
first generation Indian immigrants, it is incumbent upon us to protect and
safeguard the the future generations from this type of a mindset that
hurts the unity and purpose within our ranks.
“We welcome the decision. Swamy was hiding behind freedom of expression and was involved in hate speech,” Dr. Shaik Ubaid of the Muslim Peace Coalition, said.
“Members of Coalition Again Genocide and Indian minorities advocacy Network (ImanNet) were involved in trying to get Harvard to dump Swamy and feel very satisfied. Just imagine American Hindus being subjected to the same discrimination here that Swamy is advocating against Indian Muslims. We support the mainstream Hindu leaders in the US who are taking bolder stand against the proponents of Hindutva which is a violent Hindu supremacist ideology,” he said.
“I welcome the reform Dr Swamy has espoused to teach tolerance. Indeed, King Ashoka was a reformed man after the Kalinga war and proved it by preaching and practicing non-violence,” Mike Ghouse, a Dallas based peace activist said.
“Swamy has the freedom to teach what is in his heart, but if
he has made that transformational announcement to teach tolerance, he will have
to prove that to himself through his actions.
The first lesson for him to learn in tolerance is that he cannot demand peace
and tolerance from others, if he is intolerant himself. He has got to let go of
the baggage.
