Obituary
Joseph (Babichen) Muttatth was born on June 12, 1949 at
Muttathu House, Changangacherry, Kerala,
India. He was
the second son of famous Malayalam author, the late Muttathu Varkey, and
his wife, the late Thankamma Varkey. He completed his education from
St. Berchman's (S.B.) College, Changanacherry, Kerala and further pursued his
education of Computer Science in United States.
On September 4th, 1977, he married his loving wife Annakutty
(daughter of late Varkey and late Marium Mundanchira) and migrated to the United States
in 1978. He was blessed to be able to celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary
this past month, surrounded by his loved ones.
Joseph was employed as a computer specialist at United States Military Academy
for many years. He retired last March after a rewarding career. Joseph had a
passion for his work; so much so that he often brought it home. He was
always there to help others with numerous computer problems and loved doing so.
He enjoyed spending quality time with his grandson Joshua. He enjoyed sports, especially tennis and
football as well as reading.
Joseph loved his family dearly. He changed and influenced
lives of so many of his siblings and their families by helping them to immigrate
and settle down in the United
States. One of his lifelong passion was
promoting his renowned father’s life through Muttathu Varkey foundation.
Joseph was actively involved in the community. When he first
arrived in Rockland
in the 70s, there were only a few Malayalee families in the area. He helped his
community grow and nourish from these early days. He was proud of the vital
role he played in bringing the first Malayalee Catholic mass to Rockland. This was held
in R.P.C. church which remained the main church for Malayalee Catholic
community for years to come. He was also
an executive committee member of India Catholic Association of America,
lifelong member of Hudson Valley Malayalee Association and office bearer of
Indo American Lions club and Malayalee Association of Rockland County. Joseph
was awarded numerous awards and accolades for his professional and community
services, including the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service by the
Department of the Army.
He passed in peace on Sunday, October 4th after leading a
fulfilling life. Always listening, willing to provide guidance and aid when
needed. Or just a simple smile and laugh
to those around him. While he is no
longer with us our thoughts of the great times spent together will last till our
end. To be forever missed by those that
loved him; those that he deeply cared for.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Annakutty, children, Asha, Ashok, Jane, son in
law Dr. Ciby Abraham, grandchild Joshua,
his brothers; Marcelles, Babu and Thomas and sisters; Lilllikutty
Tommichen and Ruby John and as well as many nieces and nephews. He is

We will always carry his memory in our hearts.
