അമേരിക്കയുടെ തോക്ക് സംസ്‌കാരത്തിന് ടെക്‌സസ് സംസ്ഥാനം സുപ്രധാന പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. നോര്‍ത്ത് ടെക്‌സസിലെ ഡാലസ് നഗരത്തിലെ കേ ബെയ്‌ലി ഹച്ചിസണ്‍ കണ്‍വെന്‍ഷന്‍ സെന്ററില്‍ മെയ് 3 മുതല്‍ 6 വരെ നാഷ്ണല്‍ റൈഫിള്‍ അസോസിയേഷന്റെ(എല്‍ആര്‍എ) വാര്‍ഷികയോഗങ്ങളും 'പ്രദര്‍ശനങ്ങളും' നടക്കുകയാണ്. എന്‍ആര്‍എ, ഐഎല്‍എ ലീഡര്‍ഷിപ്പ് ഫോറം, ഡിന്നര്‍, ഓക്ഷന്‍, അംഗങ്ങളുടെ വാര്‍ഷിക പൊതുയോഗം, നാഷ്ണല്‍ എന്‍ആര്‍എ ഫൗണ്ടേഷന്‍ ബാങ്ക്വറ്റ് എന്നിവയാണ് ആകര്‍ഷണങ്ങള്‍. അംഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കും കുടുംബങ്ങള്‍ക്കും യുവജനസംഘങ്ങള്‍ക്കും പൊതുപരിപാടികളില്‍ പ്രവേശനം സൗജന്യമാണ്.
ഇപ്പോള്‍ 30 ലക്ഷം അംഗങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടെന്ന് അവകാശപ്പെടുന്ന എന്‍ആര്‍എ ആരംഭിച്ചത് മെയ് 16, 1871 ലാണ്. ആഭ്യന്തരയുദ്ധത്തില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്ത വില്യം ചര്‍ച്ചും ജോര്‍ജ വിന്‍ഗ്രേറ്റുമായിരുന്നു ഉപജ്ഞാതാക്കള്‍. യൂണിയന്‍ ട്രൂപ്പുകള്‍ ലക്ഷ്യത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് വെടിവയ്ക്കുന്നതില്‍ പരാജയപ്പെടുന്നത് കണ്ടിട്ടാണ് ഇരുവരും ഈ സംഘടനയെക്കുറിച്ച് ചിന്തിച്ചത്. പ്രാദേശികതലത്തില്‍ റൈഫിള്‍ ക്ലബ്ബുകള്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു ഉദ്ദേശം. പൊതുവെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ മാര്‍ക്ക് സ്മാന്‍ഷിപ്പ് മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തുവാനായിരുന്നു ശ്രമം. യൂണിയന്‍ ജനറല്‍ അബ്രോസ് ഇബേണ്‍ സൈഡായിരുന്നു ആദ്യ പ്രസിഡന്റ്.
തുടര്‍ന്നുള്ള വര്‍ഷങ്ങളില്‍ എന്‍ആര്‍എ പ്രധാനമായും ഷൂട്ടിംഗ് മത്സരങ്ങളും തോക്ക് സുരക്ഷാ പരീശലനങ്ങളും നടത്തി.
1920 ല്‍ നടപ്പാക്കിയ നിരോധനം മദ്യത്തിനും തങ്ങള്‍ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന വെടിക്കോപ്പുകള്‍ക്കും കരിഞ്ചന്ത സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതായി ഒരു വിഭാഗം ജനങ്ങള്‍ പരാതിപ്പെട്ടു. സംഘടിത കുറ്റകൃത്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന ടോമി ഗണ്‍(തോംസണ്‍ സബ്‌മെഷീന്‍ ഗണ്‍) പരസ്യമായി കിട്ടാതായി.
1934 ലെ നാഷ്ണല്‍ ഫയര്‍ ആംസ് ആക്ട് പൂര്‍ണ്ണായും ഓട്ടോമാറ്റിക് ആയ ആയുധങ്ങളുടെ വില്പനയില്‍ നിയന്ത്രണം ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തി. തോക്ക് വില്‍ക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് ലൈസന്‍സും ക്രിമിനലുകള്‍ക്ക് വില്‍ക്കുന്നതിന് നിരോധനം 1938 ലെ ഫെഡറല്‍ ഫയര്‍ ആംസ് ആക്ട് കൊണ്ടു വന്നു. നിയമം ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും ക്രിമിനലുകള്‍ തോക്ക് കൈവശപ്പെടുത്തുവാന്‍ വഴികള്‍ കണ്ടെത്തുമെന്ന് അന്നത്തെ എന്‍.ആര്‍.എ.പ്രസിഡന്റ് കാള്‍ ഫ്രെഡറിക് കോണ്‍ഗ്രസിന് മുമ്പാകെ മൊഴി നല്‍കി. 1960 കളില്‍ പ്രസിഡന്റ് ജോണ്‍ എഫ് കെന്നഡിയുടെ വധത്തിന് ശേഷം തപാലിലൂടെ തോക്ക് വില്‍ക്കുന്നതും വാങ്ങുന്നതും നിരോധിക്കുവാന്‍ ശ്രമം ഉണ്ടായി. കാരണം ഘാതകന്‍ ലീഹാര്‍വി ഓഡ് വാള്‍ഡ് തപാല്‍ മാര്‍ഗം സ്വന്തമാക്കിയ തോക്കാണ് ഉപയോഗിച്ചത് എന്ന കണ്ടെത്തലായിരുന്നു.
1968ല്‍ അന്തര്‍സംസ്ഥാന വില്പയും(ലൈസന്‍സുള്ള വില്‍പനക്കാര്‍ ഒഴികെ) 21 വയസിന് താഴെയുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് കൈതോക്ക് വില്‍ക്കുന്നതും നിരോധിക്കുന്ന രണ്ട് നിയമങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടായി. എന്‍ആര്‍എയുടെ എതിര്‍പ്പുമൂലം ഒരു നാഷ്ണല്‍ രജിസ്ട്രി ഉണ്ടാക്കുവാനുള്ള നിര്‍ദ്ദേശം പിന്‍വലിക്കേണ്ടിവന്നു. ക്രിമിനല്‍ മയക്കുമരുന്ന്, മാനസിക തകരാര്‍ എന്നീ പശ്ചാത്തലമുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് തോക്ക് വില്‍ക്കാനാവില്ല എന്ന് നിയമം അനുശാസിച്ചു.
നീല്‍ നോക്‌സിനും നോര്‍ഹാര്‍ലനും മറ്റു ചില എന്‍ആര്‍എ നേതാക്കള്‍ക്കും നിയമം സ്വീകാര്യമായില്ല. ഏബലീന്‍ ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റിയില്‍ പഠിച്ച നീലിന്റെ ഭാര്യ അവരുടെ ഡോം മുറിയിലെ ക്ലോസറ്റില്‍ റൈഫിള്‍ സൂക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്നു. നോക്‌സ് 40 വര്‍ഷം തന്റെ പ്രതിഷേധം വിവിധ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങളിലും മറ്റുമായി തുടര്‍ന്നു. ഭരണഘടനയുടെ രണ്ടാം ഭേദഗതിയായി തോക്കിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥാവകാശത്തിനുള്ള സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം അമേരിക്കയിലെ ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് വാഗ്ദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഇത് ഏകാധിപത്യം ഉറപ്പാക്കുന്നു എന്ന് നോക്‌സ് വാദിച്ചു.
1977ല്‍ എന്‍ആര്‍എയുടെ തലപ്പത്ത് മാക്‌സ് വെല്‍റിച്ച് എത്തി. സംഘടനയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനം വാഷിംഗ്ടണ്‍ ഡിസിയില്‍ നിന്ന് കൊളറാഡോയിലെ കൊളറാഡോ സ്പ്രിംഗ്‌സിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റാന്‍ ഇയാള്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചു. 30 മില്യന്‍ ഡോളര്‍ ചെലവില്‍ ഒരു റിക്രിയേഷന്‍ സെന്റര്‍ ന്യൂമെക്‌സിക്കോയില്‍ സ്ഥാപിക്കുവാനും നീക്കമുണ്ടായി. മെയ് 21ന് നടന്ന പൊതുയോഗത്തില്‍ തീവ്രവാദ നിലപാടുകാര്‍ സംഘടന പിടിച്ചടക്കി. ഹാര്‍ലന്‍കാര്‍ട്ടര്‍ പുതിയ എക്‌സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് വൈസ് പ്രസിഡന്റായി. എട്ടുവര്‍ഷം ഈ സ്ഥാനത്ത് തുടര്‍ന്നു. ഈ സമയത്താണ് അംഗങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം മൂന്നിരട്ടി(3 മില്യന്‍ ആയത്). കുറ്റവാളികള്‍ക്കും മാനസിക നില തകരാറിലായവര്‍ക്കും തോക്ക് നല്‍കുന്നതില്‍ അപാകതയില്ലെന്നും ഇത് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിന് നാം നല്‍കുന്ന വിലയാണെന്നും സെനറ്റ് കമ്മിറ്റി മുമ്പാകെ കാര്‍ട്ടര്‍ മൊഴി നല്‍കി.
എന്‍എന്‍എയുടെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ എക്‌സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് വൈസ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് 1991 ല്‍ സ്ഥാനമേറ്റ വെയ്ന്‍ ലാ പിയര്‍ ആണ്. മൃഗയാ വിനോദത്തിനും സ്വരക്ഷയ്ക്കും തോക്കുകള്‍ സ്വന്തമാക്കുന്നതിനെ അനുകൂലിച്ചും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിച്ചും തുടങ്ങിയ സംഘടന തോക്കുകള്‍ക്ക് മേല്‍ ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തുന്ന എല്ലാ നിയന്ത്രണങ്ങളെയും രണ്ടാം ഭേദഗതി ആയുധമാക്കി എതിര്‍ക്കുന്നു. കക്ഷിഭേദമെന്യേ മിക്കവാറും എല്ലാ നേതാക്കളും തോക്കുകള്‍ കൈവശം വയ്ക്കുന്നു. കൂട്ടക്കുരുതി ഉണ്ടാകുമ്പോള്‍ തോക്കുകള്‍ നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്ന നിയമം വേണമെന്ന് വാദിക്കുന്നു.
ഹോളിവുഡ് താരങ്ങള്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള പ്രസിദ്ധര്‍ തോക്കുകള്‍ കൈവശം വയ്ക്കുന്നു. പ്രസിദ്ധ നടന്‍ ചാള്‍ട്ടന്‍ ഹെസ്റ്റണ്‍ എന്‍ആര്‍എയുടെ പ്രസിഡന്റായിരുന്നു. 2000 ലെ വാര്‍ഷിക പൊതുയോഗത്തില്‍ ഒരു റൈഫിള്‍ തന്റെ കൈകളില്‍ ഉയര്‍ത്തിപ്പിടിച്ച് തന്റെ കൈകളില്‍ നിന്ന് തോക്ക് പിടിച്ചു വാങ്ങാന്‍ ആര്‍ക്കെങ്കിലും ധൈര്യമുണ്ടോ എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചത് വിവാദം ആയിരുന്നു.

Trump's former bodyguard did nothing out of the ordinary when he took possession of the president's medical records, the White House said Tuesday, despite the claim by Trump's former doctor that the episode felt like a "raid."Harold Bornstein, Trump's longtime personal doctor, told NBC News that Keith Schiller, the president's longtime bodyguard and former director of Oval Office operations, showed up at his office in February 2017 along with two other men to collect the records, leaving Bornstein feeling "raped, frightened and sad."
But White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders disputed the doctor's characterization of the episode.
"As is standard operating procedure for a new president, the White House Medical Unit took possession of the president's medical records," she told reporters at a White House briefing.
