The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and its
allies are ramping up for a huge fight over contraception — and demanding a
huge step back for women's health.
They're calling for a dramatic reversal of the Obama
administration's groundbreaking decision requiring insurance companies to treat
contraception like basic health care.
This was a major advancement for women's reproductive rights — providing
access to affordable, effective contraception to millions of women.
But now, nearly 50 Catholic-affiliated institutions have
filed lawsuits challenging the rule. And soon, the USCCB will launch a
high-profile "Fortnight for Freedom" campaign aimed at generating
tremendous election year pressure on President Obama and HHS Secretary Kathleen
Sebelius.
Tell Secretary Sebelius that you support her decision
providing access to affordable, effective contraception for millions of women.
The Bishops seem to believe that religious freedom means
that they are free to impose their beliefs on the rest of us. And, if they get their way, millions of women
will be denied access to affordable contraception. We can't let that happen.
These powerful forces are pressing to undo one of the most
critical advances for women's health in decades. They are determined to make
this an issue in the upcoming election cycle. Don't let them play politics with
women's health.
Don't let any one religious group impose its beliefs on the
rest of us. Tell Secretary Sebelius that you support access to affordable
contraception for all women.
This critical battle for reproductive rights will continue
throughout the summer. The U.S.
Conference of Catholic Bishops and its allies will keep putting incredible
pressure on Secretary Sebelius to back down.
Let's make sure she hears loudly and clearly from those who strongly support her decision. Genuine religious liberty and the rights of millions of American women are hanging in the balance.
