ഒരു ക്രൈസ്‌തവമെത്രാന്‍, കാറ്റുംകോളുമുള്ളഒരുദിവസം
അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഇടവക പള്ളിയിലുള്ളപ്പോള്‍, ഒരു
അക്രൈസ്‌തവയായസ്‌ത്രീഅദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെമുന്നില്‍
വന്നുനിന്നിട്ട്‌ പറഞ്ഞു, ഞാന്‍ ഒരുക്രിസ്‌ത്യാനിയല്ല.
നരകാഗ്‌നിയില്‍നിന്ന്‌ഏതെങ്കിലുംവിധത്തില്‍ എനിക്ക്‌ രക്ഷയുണ്ടോ?'
മെത്രാന്‍ അവരെമുഖംഉയര്‍ത്തി നോക്കിഎന്നിട്ടു പറഞ്ഞു,
ഇല്ല, ആത്‌മാവിനാലും വെള്ളത്താലും ജ്‌ഞാനസ്‌നാനം
ഏറ്റവര്‍ക്കുമാത്രമെരക്ഷയുള്ളു. അദ്ദേഹം ഇങ്ങനെ
പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ ആകാശത്ത്‌ നിന്ന്‌
ആ ദേവാലയത്തിന്റെമേല്‍ഒരുഇടിതീവെട്ടുകയും
ദേവാലയത്തില്‍ എല്ലായിടവുംഅഗ്‌നി വ്യാപിക്കുകയുംചെയ്‌തു.
പെട്ടന്ന്‌ ആ നാട്ടിലെ ജനങ്ങള്‍ ഓടിവന്ന്‌ ആ സ്‌ത്രീയെ
രക്ഷിച്ചെങ്കിലും മെത്രാനെ രക്ഷിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാതെ
അദ്ദേഹം അഗ്‌നിക്ക്‌ ഇരയാകുകയുംചെയ്‌തു.

There was Christian bishop in his cathedral on a stormy day, an un-Christian woman came and stood before him, and she said, “I am not a Christian. Is there salvation for me from hell-fire?”
And the bishop looked upon the woman, and he answered her saying, “Nay, there is salvation for those only who are baptized of water and of the spirit.”
And even as he spoke a bolt from the sky fell with thunder upon the cathedral and it was filled with fire.
And the men of the city came running, and they saved the woman, but the bishop was consumed, food of the fire.
