Agree with George Joseph’s analysis of the Emergency period in India. I was in college for Pre-Degree and B.Sc in SB College those days. Yes, comparing the period just before Emergency and after Emergency, we had some discipline in social and political life. Things were quite peaceful. Negative incidents were actually isolated events like Rajan case in Kerala or Sanay Gandhi issues at center. The government that came to power after Emergency, as media was under their control, exaggerated reports about the atrocities in the Emergency period. The period just before Emergency, the nation was slipping into anarchy. State Assembly’s all over India and in parliament we could see this lack of discipline and anarchy. Indira Gandhi as a patriot and only leader capable of taking decisive action at that time had to declare Emergency to save the country. If I was in her position, I would have done the same thing.
